This archive contains a new version of the Amiga LHA program, the ubiquitous archiving program that defines Aminet's most well-known distribution format.
Since versions 1.x and 2.x are no longer maintained, it was necessary to start from scratch and offer an updated version.
Although the 40.x series of Lha is fully compatible with the 1.x and 2.x series, it is not based on them. It merely implements the same format and recognizes the same command-line options.
|
New Features:
- Lha can now archive soft and hard links. A new command-line option, -Ql, specifies how these should be handled.
- Lha can now create self-extracting archives using the new command-line option -Qx.
- Lha no longer blocks the iconification of its shell window.
- Lha no longer requires huge stack sizes. The default stack size of 4K is completely sufficient.
- Compression and extraction speeds have been improved.
- Lha can be made resident (it is "pure").
If you want to use the -Qx option to create self-extracting archives, make sure that Lha is also located in the C: directory, since it needs to parse its own binary file.
|
Limitations:
- This version of Lha requires OS 2.04 or later.
- The -w option ("Set working directory") is no longer supported.
- The -lh2- and -lh3- compression formats are not included, since there isn't a single file on Aminet packed in those formats, and since they do not offer better compression.
-lh0- (no compression), -lh1- (the old LZH format), and -lh4- through -lh7- are supported.
|
Installation:
- Copy the Lha binary file to any location.
Preferably to C: if you want to make Lha resident and use the -Qx option.
- Copy the instructions to any location.

About LhA:
LhA is based on the LHA format, which Haruyasu Yoshizaki developed in 1988 under the name LHarc-originally for MS-DOS. The format combines LZSS compression with Huffman coding and quickly gained popularity worldwide.
In late 1991, Stefan Boberg ported the program to the Amiga¿optimized in 68000 assembly language and with Amiga-specific extensions. This version became the de facto standard on the Amiga and the preferred archiving method on Aminet.
Further development was handled by Jim Cooper, David Tritscher, and Sven Ottemann.
In 2026, Thomas Richter released a completely rewritten version of LHA to modernize the program and fix outstanding bugs.
